Youtube is probably blocked by your school's Internet Provider. It's therefore useful to be able to download the video onto your hard-drive. See an earlier entry for how to do this.
I use YouTube for a variety of things. Recent finds have included:
- the scene from Charade (with Audrey Hepburn) where a series of gangsters enter a funeral chapel and check that the corpse is actually dead (used in a lesson where we were considering the nature of death itself)
- The Dead Parrot Sketch (to prompt a discussion about the euphamisms used about death)
- The video "Heaven is a Half Pipe" to prompt a discussion about the nature of heaven and hell
- Derren Brown's Card Trick with Stephen Fry (in a series of lessons on Miracles for A Level). I also used his illusion where he converted an audience to evangelical christianity
- Vicky Pollard's confrontation with her History Teacher to prompt a discussion about life stages
- A brilliant celebratory video made by a Dad on the occasion of his son's Bar Mitzvah
- Several videos of infant baptism made by members of the congregations present
- Videos of evangelical preachers mid-performance
Comments
Greg - some great ideas. I have been informed, that youtube is not blocked by county, rather individual schools are making that choice. That means teachers can influence this at their own school. Systems should increasingly become more sophisticated and should allow different filters for teachers and pupils. This would make this resource available for teachers to show on the IWB without having all the school bandwidth used up by less educational videos...
Are you aware of the video footage available through e2bn? The Pathe news archive, only accessible for free from school, gives you access to a lot of historical footage just waiting to be applied in lessons. Go to E2BN for more details.
